Privacy Policy
Last updated October 1, 2026
The Short Version
- We never store the text you rewrite. It travels from your device to an AI provider through our servers and streams straight back — nothing is logged or kept.
- We keep only what we need to run your account: your email, your subscription status, and how many credits you have used.
- We never sell your data, and we never use your text to train AI models.
1. Who We Are
WriterBar ("we", "us") provides a macOS menu bar app and an iOS app that rewrite and improve text using AI, together with the writerbar.app website and the cloud services behind them. This policy describes what information we handle when you use any of these, and why.
If anything here is unclear, email us at support@writerbar.app — a human will answer.
2. Information We Collect
Account details. When you create an account we store your email address, an optional display name, and a salted hash of your password (never the password itself). If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive your email and a sign-in identifier from them instead.
Subscription and billing. On Mac, purchases go through Paddle.com, our merchant of record, who processes your payment and bills you. On iOS, when available, purchases go through the Apple App Store instead. In either case we never see your card number — we receive confirmation of what you bought (plan, expiry, renewal state) so we can unlock the right features.
Usage counters. We count the credits your rewrites consume so we can enforce plan limits and show you your remaining balance. The counter records amounts and timestamps — not the content of what you wrote.
Your library, if you sync it. Pro accounts can sync custom actions, snippets, categories, and settings between devices. That content is stored on our servers solely so your other devices can download it.
Support conversations. If you email us, we keep the thread so we can help you and follow up.
Basic technical logs. Our servers keep short-lived operational logs (timestamps, response codes, coarse request metadata) for debugging and abuse prevention.
3. What Happens to the Text You Rewrite
When you trigger a rewrite, the selected text is sent over an encrypted connection to our server, forwarded to an AI provider, and the result is streamed back to your device. The text is processed in memory only — it is not written to a database, not logged, and not retained after the response completes.
If you add your own API key (a Pro feature), your text goes directly from your device to that provider and never touches our servers at all. Your keys are stored in the local macOS Keychain, not with us.
4. Third-Party Services
We rely on a small set of providers, each receiving only what their job requires:
- OpenRouter — routes built-in rewrite requests to the AI model selected, by you or by us. The model's underlying vendor (currently including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Meta, xAI, Mistral, DeepSeek, Qwen, Moonshot, and Amazon) receives the text of that request to generate the result.
- Paddle.com — our merchant of record for Mac purchases. Paddle processes your payment and receives your email and billing details; we never see your card number.
- RevenueCat — tracks subscription state (active plan, renewal, expiry) across purchases and tells our servers what to unlock. It does not process payment itself.
- Apple App Store — for purchases made through iOS, when available, Apple processes the payment instead of Paddle and we never see your card number.
- Cloudflare — hosts our servers and database infrastructure.
- Resend — delivers account emails such as verification and password-reset messages.
These providers operate internationally, so your data may be processed on servers in a different country than the one you're in — including, for everyone, the United States.
Each of these companies handles data under its own privacy policy.
5. How We Use Your Information
We use the information above to operate the service: authenticating you, delivering rewrites, enforcing plan limits, syncing your library, answering support requests, sending essential account emails, and keeping the service secure. We do not run third-party advertising, and we do not sell or rent personal data.
6. Data Retention
- Account data is kept while your account is active and deleted within 30 days of a deletion request.
- Credit-usage counters are kept for up to 12 months for billing accuracy, then removed or anonymized.
- Support emails are kept for up to 2 years.
- Rewritten text is never retained (see Section 3).
7. Security
All traffic between your devices and our servers uses TLS encryption. Passwords are stored as salted PBKDF2 hashes. Your own AI provider keys never leave your device's Keychain. Access to production systems is limited to what is strictly necessary to operate the service.
8. Your Rights
You can ask us at any time to show you the personal data we hold about you, correct it, export it, or delete your account and everything tied to it — from the app's Settings, or by emailing support@writerbar.app. We act on requests promptly.
If you are in India, these rights are given to you directly under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act): the right to access a summary of your personal data and the processing we do with it, the right to correction and erasure, and the right to file a complaint with the Data Protection Board of India if you believe we have not handled your data lawfully.
Depending on where you live, these rights may also be backed by other law — for example the GDPR or CCPA — including the right to complain to your local data-protection authority.
9. Children
WriterBar is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has created an account, contact us and we will remove it and their data.
10. Changes to This Policy
If we make meaningful changes we will update this page and, for significant changes, notify you by email or in the app. The "Last updated" date above always reflects the current version.
